What Is the Trolltunga Sky Ladder?
.jpg)
The Sky Ladder is the final, near-vertical section of the Trolltunga Via Ferrata route. This guide covers what the experience involves, who it suits, what is included and how to book.
The Sky Ladder is a near-vertical steel ladder fixed into the rock face below Trolltunga. It is the final, exposed section of the Trolltunga Via Ferrata route, and the only way to complete the climb is to go straight up. Trolltunga Active is the only operator that includes the Sky Ladder as part of a guided overnight adventure.
You climb the route with a certified guide, spend the night in an arctic dome overlooking Ringedalsvatnet, visit Trolltunga at sunset, and return the next morning after breakfast. The full experience runs over approximately 28 hours.
What Does the Experience Look Like?
The tour covers 24 to 28 kilometres in total. Here is how it unfolds:
- You meet your guide at the Trolltunga Active base in Skjeggedal at 10:30 am.
- You walk along Ringedalsvatnet lake for about an hour before reaching the start of the Via Ferrata.
- You clip in and begin the climb. The route takes around two hours, with the Sky Ladder as the highlight near the top.
- After the climb, you reach the arctic domes where an afternoon snack and dinner are waiting.
- You hike out to Trolltunga for sunset before returning to the dome for the night.
- In the morning, you have breakfast and can visit Trolltunga again before hiking back to the base by early afternoon.
What Is the Sky Ladder Like to Climb?
The Sky Ladder is steep. You are clipped in to the safety wire at all times, and your guide is with you throughout the climb. The exposure is real: you are high above the valley floor, and the views over Ringedalen and the Folgefonna Glacier expand with every step upward.
Most people find it demanding but manageable. The key is to take it at your own pace and trust the equipment. Your guide will walk you through everything before you start.
Who Is the Sky Ladder Experience For?
This is an advanced-level experience. You need a good level of fitness and no serious knee problems. Prior climbing experience is not required, but you should be comfortable with heights and sustained physical effort.
The minimum age is 15 years. At least two participants are required for the tour to run.
If you are unsure whether this suits you, contact the team directly. They will give you an honest answer based on your situation.
