About us

Our philosophy

Trolltunga Active guides are motivators and storytellers who will let you explore Norwegian nature at its best! Our focus is safety, sustainability and making your adventure personal. One of our big goals is to provide you with the full Hardanger experience, by offering a great choice of different activities for you to stay several days in the area – which of course increases your positive contribution to local small-scale tourism.

Equally, we are aiming to grow more into a full-year destination, arranging many exciting activities all year round throughout the whole region. Yet offering tours in winter can be challenging and demands a great deal of experience, expertise, and local knowledge. If the winter conditions require it, we might postpone your adventure due to safety concerns. But do not worry, we will get you out there as soon as it is safe!

The story behind

When Jostein bought a “hotel” in 2006, everyone said he was crazy and that nobody would stay in his hotel, since Odda was known as one of the ugliest cities in Norway. Only two years later he realized: they were right, and he was almost broke. What he needed now was an attraction. So, he came up with the idea to offer guided hikes to Trolltunga, an interesting rock formation that was not a big thing yet. Over the last decade, this rock has grown into one of the biggest attractions of Norway. Slowly but steadily, Trolltunga Active has grown into the biggest activity company in the Trolltunga region and together with Trolltunga Hotel and other valuable partners we are creating unforgettable experiences for travelers from all around the world.

Leave no trace

We aim to minimize our negative impacts on our working environment – in our case nature. It is our most valuable good. Therefore, we try to protect it and to maximize the positive impacts of tourism through education and creating awareness. Join our tours and learn more about how to leave the smallest trace possible.

ON the beaten track

Today's tourism has spread into the most remote corners of the world. In popular natural environments it is crucial to make people understand, why it is so much better to stay “on the beaten track”. In busy areas, such as the Trolltunga, people walking freely all over the mountain create a far bigger impact than those sticking to the indicated path. Bit by bit, the entire mountain turns will into a tourist trail. We are here to open your eyes and make you understand how to behave in a considerate, thoughtful and respectful way when you are travelling, especially out in nature.

FAQ

Can I bring my dog on a guided tour?

Notify us in advance. It depends on the other guests in the group, and the guides of that tour. We also have guides with dogs, and it is important for them to know about this case in advance. This is a long hike and is not suitable for some breeds especially small dogs. The Via Ferrata tours are not for dogs.

Do I need a guide to hike Trolltunga outside the main season?

It is not mandatory, but it is recommended to use a guide in the period of 1 October – 31 May. This is due to uncertainty related to weather, snow, rivers, which previously have led to several rescue operations.

Do you offer any discounts for staying at the Trolltunga Hotel if we are booked on a hike with Trolltunga Active?

Unfortunately, we do not have any discounts for that.

There is a minimum of two people on the tours. What happens if I am the only one?

We will ask you to move your booking to another day and you will be refunded if this is not possible. Alternatively, you can wait until the evening before the hike and see if there are any last-minute bookings. If that does not happen and you still want to hike, you must pay for two.
