A guided winter sunset hike to Trolltunga with an overnight stay in mountain domes and a scenic return the next day.

In wintertime the tours to Trolltunga start on P2 parking in Skjeggedal. During this time of a year, it is necessary to walk with micro spikes or snowshoes, that is why the hike during this season is more challenging. We also have several uphills ahead of us but because it is a sunset tour, there is no reason to rush. You have enough time to find the right pace, admire the views and listen to all the information your guide has to share. On the way up, we will stop in our "base camp" and leave our backpacks here. There we will also enjoy small snacks and hot drinks to have more energy for the last part of the hike. Now it is only the last short stretch to Trolltunga left.

As the evening will slowly close in, we might meet the last hikers going down. Usually once we reach "the Troll's tongue", we are alone out there. Here it is time for taking pictures and soaking up the atmosphere of the rocky dominant. After the photoshoot, you can look forward to a cup of hot chocolate, a warming fire and a delicious dinner. Once we are back in the domes, you can curl up in your warm sleeping bag and relax after a looong day out in nature.

After a good sleep in the dome, you wake up to a new morning. After enjoying breakfast, freshly brewed coffee and tea, we pack our stuff together and start the hike back to the civilisation. Normal time to be back at the starting point is between 14pm and 15pm the second day.

If possible, we slide with snow racers for the return down to the P2 parking. A fun and easy last 4 km.

Be aware that the weather during the Norwegian winter is unpredictable and it can change at any time. Your guides are educated in reading the mountain conditions and has a lot of experience in this terrain. Your safety is our priority! That is why on the iciest days, we cannot guarantee that it will be safe to go down on the rock itself. We will make sure to show you alternative and equally beautiful photo spots and that you will feel like a true explorer after this overnight expedition.

Level of difficulty: advanced

The weather conditions greatly determine the level of difficulty.  Please inform your guide of any medical conditions that might impact you during your hike or in an emergency.

  • Minimum age: 15 years
  • A minimum number of 2 participants for the tour to run

During the winter, the conditions in the mountains are unpredictable. They can change from minute to minute. Temperature can be deceiving as the wind plays an important role in how cold it feels. Similarly, the snow conditions have a great impact on how easy or hard the hike gets. Fresh powder snow is great for skiing, but strenuous to walk on with snowshoes.

A general thumb rule is: prepare for the worst conditions but do not overload your backpack, weight matters greatly when it is about saving energy. Use the onion look: layers that can easily be taken on and off. On a sunny day remember that the snow reflects the sun light which makes it stronger – suncream and sunglasses are essential!

We do not cancel tours due to bad weather. Even if the conditions look harsh, they can also turn out to be much better once we reach the mountains. The only times we cancel is when the bad weather becomes dangerous. We will inform you in case of cancellation. Please read our cancellation policies for more information.

We recommend joining the information meeting at Trolltunga Hotel at 9 pm the night before your hike.

10:30 am: Meet your guide and travel companions at the Trolltunga Active Base in Skjeggedal 20, 5770 Tyssedal. Beware the road to Skjeggedal is your first adventure for today, depending on the weather conditions good winter tyres, spikes or snow chains are crucial.
