What to Pack for Trolltunga: The Complete Gear and Preparation Guide

The Trolltunga hike covers 22 to 28 kilometres of mountain terrain in an unpredictable climate. This guide covers everything you need to pack for a safe and comfortable day on the mountain.
What should you pack for the Trolltunga hike?
The Trolltunga hike covers 22 to 28 kilometres of mountain terrain in a climate that can change without warning. Packing correctly is one of the most important decisions you make before setting out. The list below covers everything you need to complete the hike comfortably and safely.
Footwear
Hiking boots with ankle support and a waterproof membrane are non-negotiable. The trail crosses rocky, uneven ground and can be wet even on clear summer days. Do not attempt the hike in trail runners, trainers or casual shoes. Break your boots in before the trip to avoid blisters on the mountain.
Clothing
- Base layer: Moisture-wicking material such as merino wool or synthetic. Avoid cotton entirely.
- Mid layer: A fleece or light down jacket for warmth on the exposed plateau.
- Outer layer: A waterproof and windproof shell jacket. This is essential, not optional.
- Legs: Hiking trousers and waterproof over-trousers if rain is in the forecast.
- Hat and gloves: Even in summer, temperatures on the Hardanger plateau can drop close to zero.
- Wool socks: Bring at least one extra pair.
Food and water
There are no shops or cafés on the trail. Bring enough food for a full day of sustained physical activity. Carry at least 2 to 2.5 litres of water. High-energy snacks, a proper lunch, nuts, energy bars and chocolate all work well on the mountain. A small water filter or purification tablets allow you to refill from streams on the plateau.
Equipment
- Trekking poles: Strongly recommended, particularly on the descent when legs are tired.
- Headlamp: Essential for early morning starts or if you return after dark.
- Basic first aid kit: Include blister plasters, pain relief and bandaging material.
- Map or downloaded GPS route: The trail is marked, but navigation support is valuable in low visibility.
- Fully charged phone: Keep it in an inner pocket to preserve battery in cold temperatures.
- Emergency whistle: Lightweight and potentially life-saving in a remote environment.
What to leave at home
Heavy denim jeans, cotton base layers and oversized backpacks above 30 litres will slow you down or make you uncomfortable over a long day. Pack light and pack smart.
